Module 1: Introduction to depression

Objective of the Module: Understand what depression is, its symptoms, and how it impacts daily life.

  1. Definition of depression:

  1. Feeling sad and being depressed are not the same… let us explain!

Sadness is a natural and temporary emotion in response to difficult or painful situations. Depression, on the other hand, is a persistent state that affects daily functioning, lasts more than two weeks, and may appear without any specific reason.

A key characteristic to keep in mind is that sadness improves over time and with distraction, while depression tends to persist and intensify without intervention.

  1. Explanation of emotional, physical, and behavioral symptoms

Tools and activities:

  1. Guided Reflection on Personal Experience with Symptoms

    Activity: Personal Reflection Journal

Download the reflection journal here to start your routine.

    Benefits:

    • Helps with introspection without judgment.

    • Identifies emotional patterns and triggers.

  2. Educational infographics on depression

  1. Exercise: identifying automatic thoughts

    Activity: Thoughts and Emotions Log

Use the log to write down negative automatic thoughts you experience throughout the day. This will help you identify which thoughts are predominant and restructure them.

    Access the log here.

    Some examples are:

    • “I’m not good enough.”

    • “Everything I do turns out badly.”

    • “I’ll never feel better.”

  1. Emotional Timeline

Activity: Download your emotional timeline here.

In the template, create a timeline with your memories from childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, and the present.

Record significant events you went through during those stages.

Write down the emotions you experienced in each situation described.

🎊 You’ve completed the first module on Depression! 🎉
Keep going with the process—you’re doing great 💙
